Argyrophilic granules in the excretory ductal cells of the human submandibular glands

The submandibular salivary glands of 20 patients with labial cancer were observed microscopically by means of the author's variant of a modification of the Grimelius De Grandi reaction. The modification consisted of the use of a more concentrated silver nitrate solution and a longer impregnation time. The whole of the canalicular system, together with the myelinated nerve fibres and the collagen and reticular fibres, stained a dark brownish black. Enzymatic extraction of the principal component substances of the gland showed that the remaining impregnanted material was a lipoprotein whose origin is still obscure.
