Reoperations in patients with atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower extremities

Questionnaire study, carried out in the vascular surgery centres in Poland, brought about the material enabling analysis of the causes of complications, and therefore reoperations in the patients with atherosclerotic ischaemia of the lower extremities and eventual results. Reoperation was performed in 127 patients (7.25%) out of 1751 patients treated surgically. Second surgery was performed in 97% cases nearly on the same day. Arteriography preceded reoperation in 91 patients (71.7%), providing an information on the peripheral arteries status in 63 patients. Polish-made vascular prostheses were used for the reoperation in 38 patients, while foreign-made prostheses in 35 patients. Excellent or favourable effects were obtained in 40% of the reoperated patients. No expected improvement was observed in 20% of patients, while in 18% of the patients reoperation ended with death.
