In a controlled study, maize oil was applied every 4 h to the entire body of 25 preterm infants, and their rectal temperatures were measured and maintained with a warmer. The infants together with their age-matched controls were breast fed. Fasting serum triglyceride values were estimated before and at 72 h after the start of the study. The test group required the warmer less than did the control, and had higher serum triglyceride values.
