Using a simple method for isolation and 111In-oxine labelling of autologous granulocytes, we performed scintigraphic studies of 79 patients (80 investigations) with suspected infectious or inflammatory abdominal processes, or with fever of unknown origin eventually shown to be caused by intra-abdominal infection, inflammation, or tumor. The predictive value of a positive scintigram was 82% and that of a negative scintigram 95%. Accumulation of 111In-labelled granulocytes in tumors was the most frequent cause of false positive scintigrams. 111In-granulocyte scintigraphy may be of particular value in cases of longstanding fever caused by silent infectious or inflammatory processes in the abdomen.
