Diagnosis of non-insulin-dependent diabetes in general practice

With the object of establishing the diagnosis of non-insulin-dependent diabetes as early as possible in the age group 60-75 years, screening of 408 patients was undertaken in general practice. Two hundred and one patients were requested to come for investigation while 207 patients were examined in connection with other consultations. Eight cases of diabetes were found which had not previously been recognized and two of these had diabetic retinopathy. It is concluded from this investigation that systematic investigation of blood sugar levels in patients who consult their general practitioners can reveal a considerable proportion of the residual group of patients with diabetes with limited symptoms in the course of three years and with a reasonable expenditure of efforts and economic resources.
