Interest and research pertaining to diabetes has expanded in recent years. The American Diabetes Association recently appointed a Task Force to evaluate new information on nutrition principles and dietary recommendations for individuals with diabetes. The Task Force addressed issues such as 1) the optimal protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake for diabetics, 2) the role of dietary fiber, 3) the glycemic index and its relation to food exchanges, and 4) the value of fish oils in the diet. It also evaluated changing educational and motivational techniques, and the special needs of minority populations. Overall the dietary recommendations made by the Task Force emphasized the importance of individualized, flexible diets in promoting client compliance. Guidelines were designed to help dietitians and nutritionists develop dietary approaches appropriate for specific clients. The team approach, involving skilled health professionals, the client, and his or her family, was recommended for implementing the educational process.(aje)
