Formation of the pudendal nerve was studied bilaterally in 100 human fetuses and in monkeys, dogs, and rats (10 specimens in each group). The human pudendal nerve is formed by the ventral sacral rami of S1-S2. It mainly contains fibers from S2-S3 and S2-S4 rami and in few cases it is formed by rami S1-S3, S1-S4, S1-S2, S2-S5. In animals the nerve arises from the ventral rami of S1-S3. In most cases the pudendal nerve in human fetuses, dogs and rats forms separate plexus. However, in adult humans and monkeys the nerve belongs to the sacral plexus.
