Serological study of the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in 167 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or chronic lymphadenopathy syndrome (LAS)

Antibody levels to Toxoplasma gondii in 84 patients with AIDS, of whom 21 had cerebral or disseminated toxoplasmosis, and 83 LAS patients, were measured using IFAT and HAT. High titres were seen in 15 AIDS patients with acute toxoplasmosis, and in 11 AIDS and 14 LAS patients with no clinical signs. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in AIDS or LAS patients and 500 healthy controls, based on the presence of specific antibodies, but the high titres (>4000 IU/ml) of some of the AIDS patients could be interpreted as a serological sign of reactivation of toxoplasmosis.
