In order to determine the contamination level of French hemophiliacs with the retrovirus LAV/HTLVIII, a national investigation of 1,670 hemophiliacs was performed. Results demonstrated that 49% were seropositive for LAV/HTLVIII antibodies. Of these 12.4% had clinical and/or biological symptoms of immunodeficiency. Regional differences with regard to the origin of blood used for plasma fractionation clearly appeared.
