Merkel cell carcinoma--a potentially aggressive disease

The clinical and pathological findings in a case of disseminated Merkel cell carcinoma initially diagnosed by light and electron microscopy are presented to illustrate the potentially aggressive behaviour of this uncommon small cell tumour of the skin. The literature is briefly reviewed with discussion of management and of the contribution to that of fine needle aspiration cytology of an intra-abdominal metastasis.
