India's Drugs Consultative Committee and Drug Technical Advisory Board have called for the ban of sales of 5 categories of antidiarrheals as defined under Section 26 of the Drug and Cosmetics Act. The banned antidiarrheals include those with adsorbents (e.g., pectin), nonabsorbable sulphonamides (e.g., sulpha guanidine), antimotility drugs for pediatric we (e.g., atropine), halogenated hydroxyquinoline for pediatric use, and fixed dose antidiarrheals and those containing neomycin, streptomycin, and dihydrostreptomycin. India's drug controller Dr. P. Das Gupta reports that all state drug controllers and all associations of manufacturers have been informed of the ban. Each state drug controller is responsible for informing manufacturers under their jurisdiction. Prewarning of the ban allows members of manufacturer association time to develop their marketing strategies.
