A different subcellular distribution of nucleoside phosphotransferase was demonstrated in the brain of several animal species (nuclear) with respect to other tissues tested (cytosolic). The cerebral enzyme purified about 272 fold from a crude nuclear fraction, showed properties similar to those observed with the enzymes from embryo and intestinal mucosa of chicken. For the nuclear enzyme a metabolic role different from cytosolic enzyme has been hypothesized.
