Sputum samples obtained on 4 occasions prior to death from an AIDS patient in whom Pneumocystis pneumonia was found only at autopsy on examination of lung sections using a modified Grocott's stain, were stained by the Papanicolaou method and viewed under ultraviolet light. This simple technique revealed the presence of a group of yellow, brilliantly fluorescing Pneumocystis on one of 8 slides and is recommended as a screening test in any case in which Pneumocystis pneumonitis is clinically suspected.
