Orthopaedic surgery for correction of maxillofacial deformities has developed immensely over the last two decades and represents today a wide variety of surgical techniques. In this review the etiological factors behind various facial deformities are listed. Further, indications for surgical treatment, preoperative routines and the timing of surgery are discussed. A classification of maxillofacial deformities according to skeletal relationship in the sagittal, vertical and transversed directions is given, and finally the most commonly employed surgical techniques are illustrated by line tracings of the osteotomies and by case presentations.
