Effect of various factors on the carcinoembryonic antigen and alpha fetoprotein levels of the blood serum of children

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) were determined in the serum of 83 healthy children and 73 children with various inflammatory diseases aged from 2 to 14 years. The effects of such factors as age, sex and nutritional status were evaluated in both groups. The concentration of CEA in healthy children not exceeding 4.1 ng/ml and that of AFP not over 12.2 ng/ml were regarded as normal. No significant relationship was found between AFP level and age, sex, nutritional status and inflammatory diseases. The mean CEA values were not significantly different in children belonging to various age groups, having different nutritional status or inflammatory diseases. Only the sex had a significant influence on the mean serum CEA level which was higher in boys.
