Hygienic, waste-free drinking systems for pigs and cattle which allow the animals to drink naturally according to type are discussed. Trough sprays are considered most suitable for pigs and nipple drinkers with flexible teats for piglets. Drinking angles were measured in the field for dairy cows and used in the design of drinkers and troughs for tethered and loose housing. Length of drinking time, preference for warm or cold water and depth of muzzle immersion were also studied. For store cattle, tap drinkers used 16% less water than troughs.
