Neurotoxicity of bismuth salts specially lies on their gastrointestinal resorption and on the crossing of the blood-brain barrier. Those depend on their respective solubilities in water and lipids, classically estimated by octanol-water partition coefficient. These coefficients were determined for 6 bismuth salts with pH approaching 1.0-4.0 and 7.4 simulating gastrointestinal and blood-brain barier physiological conditions. All the partition coefficients were null. Therefore, the octanol-water partition coefficient cannot explain bismuth neurotoxicity.
