Health expectancy by local area in Montreal: a summary of findings

For each of the five local community service districts of the Montreal General Hospital Department of Community Health, population health status was analyzed in terms of years of life expectancy at birth, and in terms of years of life free of health-related activity limitation. The analyses were based on death data by census tract for 1975-77 (N = 7,113), census population data for 1976 (N = 227,440), and health survey data on activity limitation for 1979-80 (N = 1,368). Life expectancy at birth in predominately anglophone and middle-class Notre-Dame-de-Grace (NDG) was 9 years greater than in predominately francophone and working-class St-Henry/Little Burgundy. For expected years of life free of activity limitation, the disparity between the two areas was 14 years.
