The paper was presented at a seminar on 'Women and rural development in Africa', held in Algiers, Algeria, from 4-8 September 1982. After an overview of the huge problems of contemporary male migration and its consequences for rural women in West Africa, the specific problems of migrant women workers are studied from statistics on women employed in Cape Verde and from data from a project on participatory development in the urban milieu of the main suburbs of Dakar.
