An exploration is presented of the reasons behind the migration of women from rural areas of Thailand into the cities, often into prostitution. It ties the issue of prostitution to environmental and development problems in Thailand. It argues that prostitution is the outcome of numerous interconnected problems affecting women in Developing Countries, and an example of how development impacts women detrimentally. It concludes that governments must consider women's needs and rights in the process of development, and devise plans for alternative options to replace tourism. Finally, the field of social work must concern itself with the issue of prostitution as an international social issue which should not be ignored.
