Growth pattern and nutritional status of selected 8 to 10 year old children of Coimbatore City

A sample of 528 boys and 450 girls aged 8 to 10 years from primary schools was selected for the study. The growth pattern of 768 of them was followed for 2 years. Height and weight were positively correlated. Boys were taller and heavier than girls. A significant positive correlation was observed between family income and height and weight of the children and between these, in turn, and nutritional status. Incidence of children's diseases, including diarrhoea, chickenpox and mumps, was higher in the low-income groups.
