Use of a lyophilized preparation of Bordetella pertussis endotoxin-coated sheep erythrocytes in the serological diagnosis of whooping cough

Highly active lyophilised endotoxin preparation was obtained by phenol-water method from dry mass of B. pertussis. Submission of this preparation to alkaline treatment increased its activity in passive haemagglutination test. In order to facilitate pertussis diagnosis nonsensitized and sensitised, glutaraldehyde fixed, lyophilised preparation was produced in ampoules for passive haemagglutination test. This diagnostic preparation was tested in passive haemagglutination test on 238 sera from children suspected of pertussis, 382 sera from children suspected of Mycoplasma infection, 82 sera from children suffering from noninfective diseases and 255 sera from blood donors. It was found that serum titer higher than 1:40 in those with clinical picture characteristic for pertussis may suggest infection with Bordetella.
