The agglutinin response to whole-cell and acellular pertussis vaccines is Bordetella pertussis--strain dependent

Groups of 20 infants received three doses of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine at 2, 4 and 6 months of age, with either a whole-cell (DTP) or acellular (APDT) pertussis component. Pre- and post-vaccination sera were assessed for pertussis agglutinins after overnight incubation with one of three bacterial suspensions: (A) strains 130/138, used to manufacture DTP, (B) a laboratory strain 460, (C) strain Tohama, from which APDT had been manufactured. Pre-vaccination sera gave low titres with A, slightly higher with B, and much higher with C . N.W. Preston.
