It is generally accepted today that pirenzepine and ranitidine are essential elements in a physician's treatment and prevention of ulcer caused by stress. The aim of our study was to compare these two drugs in the prevention of this pathology in patients with severe head injury. A group of 26 patients of either sex, aged between 14 and 73, was treated with pirenzepine and ranitidine by parenteral infusion at the daily dosage of 30 mg and 450 mg respectively for a period ranging between 5 and 21 days. Both drugs confirmed their effectiveness and tolerability, preventing the onset of gastroduodenal stress haemorrhage in all patients, without causing side-effects. On the basis of the results obtained and of previous reports, we can conclude, particularly in the case of pirenzepine, that the primary cytoprotective action has a complementary role in the clinical effectiveness of this compound.
