Infection prevention training: lessons from India

AVSC develops curricula and other training materials for use in a range of training courses, with the goal of improving providers' ability to deliver safe and effective reproductive health care services. However, before producing a final version of a curriculum, AVSC field tests a draft version in several countries to assess its usefulness, completeness, and adaptability to the various settings in which AVSC works. The author observed a field test in India of AVSC's infection prevention curriculum, which trains health care workers how to reduce the risk of transmitting infections between clients, staff, and the community. Feedback received from course participants and facilitators will inform the revision of the curriculum. To begin the training process, AVSC held a workshop in Lucknow, the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh. The author describes the orientation in Lucknow, training given at the Bidhnoo community health center in Kanpur, the curriculum's use at an on-site location, and the need for staff involvement and administrative support to ensure training program success.
