The paper analyzes the changes in the area of land used for different purposes in Agra district of Uttar Pradesh during the period 1960-70, and the causes influencing such changes. The analysis indicated considerable change in the pattern of land use, varying from purpose to purpose and from year to year. A notable increase in the forest area by about 41% was observed during the study period. The area under pastures and grazing, trees, groves and cultivable waste land, etc. declined by 17% during the period. There was increase of about 4% in the area sown more than once in cropping intensity respectively. The results of correlation analysis suggested that increase in the irrigation facilities has helped to widen the scope for the intensive use of land for cultivation. There was a 41% increase in forest land, a 4% increase in land sown more than once and a 46% increase in irrigated land during the period 1960/61 to 1969/70. Fallow land and uncultivated land declined while land not available for cultivation remained constant.
