Comparison of ear tissue regeneration in mammals

The ability to regenerate tissue for the repair of holes punched in their ears was tested with a variety of mammals. In addition to the rabbit, which has a high capacity for ear tissue regeneration, the chinchilla, cow, pig, rat, mouse, marmoset, stumptail monkey and springhare also showed limited success. Although in some cases the wounds were closed by scar tissue, regeneration was not seen in the ears of African green monkeys, Rhesus monkeys, Squirrel monkeys, sheep, dogs or Kirk's dik-dik by the end of six months of observation. Cartilage was seen to be replaced from either the perichondrium or the blastema in different animals and, in rabbits, older regenerated tissue also showed bone formation.
