Ceruletide, a decapeptide analogue of cholecystokinin, is a drug with recognized cholecystokinetic activity at gastrointestinal level, and a recently documented analgesic action at lower doses than usual. In two randomized clinical trials of ceruletide vs a classical analgesic-spasmolytic association (one trial in biliary colic and another in renal colic, with protocols as similar as possible), ceruletide (1 ng/kg i.v.)was shown to be inferior for renal colic but not for biliary colic. The reason for this may probably be a specific spasmolytic activity on the Oddi sphincter, useful for the resolution of biliary colic at low safe doses. New strictly double blind comparative studies are needed to verify the effect of the drug in biliary colic.
