Resistance in mosquitoes (particularly Anopheles culicifacies) to insecticides, combined with the increasing unwillingness of rural villagers in India to use insecticides on cost and health grounds, has led to an alternative strategy of bio-environmental malaria control. The authors review the cost-effectiveness of one such project launched in June 1983 in numerous villages in Gujarat, and compare it with control measures using insecticides.
