Cytodiagnosis of early stomach cancer

The morphology of cancer cells in brush smears of early gastric carcinoma has been analyzed in 19 cases. Three groups of smears with respect to histologic type of cancer have been recognized: intestinal adenocarcinoma, signet-ring cell carcinoma and anaplastic carcinoma. In intestinal adenocarcinoma clusters of large cancer cells with abundant, sometimes cylindrical cytoplasm were present. Cells of anaplastic carcinoma and signet-ring cells carcinoma occurred almost exclusively in isolation. In signet-ring cell carinoma abundant foamy cytoplasm and eccentric nucleis characterized the cells. In contrast, in anaplastic carcinoma, cells with scanty cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nucleis were present.
