The paper contains an analysis of 162 cases of gastric carcinoma, of which 141 (87%) were treated surgically. In 31 cases (22%) therapeutic operations were done, as considered by the operating surgeon. The most frequent therapeutic operation was partial gastrectomy (19 cases). In 12 cases total gastrectomy was done. Palliative operations were done in 66 cases (46.8%), including partial gastrectomy (21.3%), gastroenterostomy (14.8%) and nutritional gastrostomy (10.6%). In 31.2% of cases only exploratory laparotomy was done. Among 31 patients with operable tumours early carcinoma was found in 2 cases (6.4%). The mortality after these operations was high.sbd.17.3%. In the group undergoing therapeutic operations it was even higher.sbd.19.3%.
