Fertility transition and education in Goroka, eastern highlands province, Papua New Guinea

Data are presented on fertility and some of its concomitants (marriage patterns, infant mortality and child fostering rates) in relation to educational attainment for a Papua New Guinea Highlands rural town. A total number of 169 ever-married women were interviewed . Trends in women's fertility are discussed with reference to both women's and husbands' educational attainment. The data are generally consistent with the Fertility Deficit Model of early fertility transition. Increasing educational attainment levels of both women and their spouses appear to be fertility primers, probably via increased income generation.
