The third Panel Report published in 1978 (Ibid. 173, 59-72) is reviewed and updated by a new panel consisting of seven veterinarians and the Director of the American Humane Association. Professional guidance is the aim of the report. The conventional methods of euthanasia, and the characters and mode of action of the different agents are tabulated and discussed. The conclusion draws attention to the paucity of data on pain and discomfort in animals undergoing euthanasia, and endorses the need for experiments to further evaluate the different methods of killing with as little pain as possible.
