Injections of propyl thiouracil (goitrogen) were given in both adult and juvenile male of E. amandava during February (quiescent phase) and only in adults during August (progressive phase) and October (regressive phase). The effects of goitrogen on body weight, testis size in situ, LH-dependent plumage pigmentation and plumage regeneration were examiend at monthly intervals. The results suggest that the goitrogen, depending upon its dose, phase of the breeding cycle and/or gonadal status and sexual maturity, may stimulate, inhibit or produce no effect on the body weight and testis development cycles. Propyl thiouracil produced dose-dependent inhibitory action on plumage regeneration without having any influence on LH-dependent plumage pigmentation.
