The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the safety limit for preservation and to compare the protective effect of Collins'M solution and modified Collins solution (K+ 40, Na+ 60, Mg++ 26, Ca++ 0.5mEq/L) on isolated rat hearts during hypothermic preservation. Rat hearts were flushed with both of the Young's solution and either of Collins'M or modified Collins solutions. The hearts were then stored in the each solution and divided into 8 groups every 4 or 5 rats with the ischemic time period of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 hours of preservation, and were reperfused using Langendorff's technique. Then, hemodynamics, myocardial enzymes, myocardial cations, and electron microscopic findings of myocardium were evaluated in each group. We concluded from these results that safety time limit for the hypothermic preservation of the hearts was about 3 hours in Collins'M solution and about 6 hours in modified Collins solution. And these results suggested that modified Collins solution was effective for heart preservation compared with Collins'M solution.
