Education is recognized as a central element in development in Sudan, and knowledge of demographic factors is considered essential for competent education programme planning. The paper investigates education problems of Sudan, looking at rates of school enrolment; the provision of basic education; the imbalances between urban and rural areas and between regions in terms of services; curricula and their relevance; educational wastage and financing. Levels of educational achievement are also examined in relation to the size and growth of the population. Population projections for Sudan are presented in two scenarios: A and B. Projection A assumes that the present high total fertility rate of 6.89 children per woman will continue and that mortality will decline gradually. Projection B is the lower projection and assumes a gradual fertility decline to an average of 4 children per woman by the year 2003, accompanied by a slow mortality decline. The projections are used to predict educational enrolments in order to focus attention on educational resource and personnel needs required to serve the population.
