China has large numbers of visitors, 42 million in 1993, putting it in the world's big league of major destination countries. However, its arrivals are dominated by ethnic Chinese from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan and foreign visitors account for only around 10% of the total. Following the decline in China's popularity after the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, and its aftermath, tourism picked up again towards the end of 1990 and has shown exceptionally strong increases since then. Now there are considerable new developments taking place in the hotel sector and the prospects for strong growth from China's major foreign origin markets look good.
