Calf diarrhoea rotavirus was detected by the latex agglutination test, Rotascreen, in 34 of 106 faecal samples from calves with diarrhoea. Electron microscopy detected rotavirus in 24 of these 34 samples, rota- and coronavirus in 5 and coronavirus in 1. Four samples were negative. In the 72 Rotascreen-negative samples, electron microscopy detected rotavirus in 7, coronavirus in 11 and rota- and coronavirus in 1. The two methods were in total agreement in 93 of the 106 samples. it is concluded that the latex agglutination test is suitable for routine laboratory work, both in the research laboratory and in veterinary practice.
