Diagnosis and surgical treatment of congenital choanal atresia

The results of examination of 15 patients with unilateral choana atresia evidence for prevalence of right-side bony variant, higher incidence for females, frequent association with development defects. The authors emphasize diagnostic importance of a purposeful analysis of complaints and case history data, valid assessment of objective laboratory findings, advantages of endonasal surgery. Devices for measuring atresia size, its atraumatic elimination, treatment methods have been developed in addition to individual approach regarding the patients' age, anatomo-topographic features of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx, reactive changes of local tissues and body functions.
