Evaluation of left ventricular myocardial function in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease by rapid stimulation of the atria

The diagnostic possibilities of the atrial stimulation test in the evaluation of the myocardial function were studied in 57 men, age 30-58, who had no symptoms of cardiac insufficiency. This test proved to be informative. Disturbances in the left ventricle contractility observed during atrial stimulation were manifested in no increase or a decrease in the mean rate of shortening of circular myocardial fibers, no decrease or an increase in the end systolic volume (end systolic size) of the left ventricle, a reduction of the ejection fraction, the onset or aggravation of left ventricle asynergia. The atrial stimulation test and simultaneous echocardiography of the left ventricle is indicated when echocardiography under physical load is impossible. Contrast ventriculography during rapid atrial stimulation is recommended to increase the informativeness of angiography in ischemic heart disease patients.
