Data from two rounds of the Ghana Living Standards Survey (GLSS), covering the September 1987-89 period, are used to explore income and expenditure profiles of households in Ghana. Attention is drawn to some specific groups of households in which poverty is concentrated through a comparison of income and expenditure profiles of selected income classes. Those whose expenditure levels are considered inadequate are identified by their distribution spatially and by key household characteristics. A summary on aggregate national income and expenditure estimates, and a discussion on the definition and classification of poverty is followed by a discussion of income distribution within socioeconomic groups as well as the socioeconomic characteristics of income classes. The composition of income and expenditure by income classes is presented.
