A "world" distribution of income and of real poverty and affluence

International comparative estimates of income distribution are formulated using data from household income and expenditure surveys for nine developing and five developed countries. The focus is on a comparison among countries concerning the percentage and number of the affluent and those living in poverty. The results show a decrease since the 1960s in the number of those living in poverty. The significance for economic development of the growth of an affluent population in the developing world is considered.
