The purpose of this study was to discover whether both the racing greyhound and the other breeds of the sight hound group have similar blood patterns and, if necessary, to establish new reference values for these blood parameters for sight hounds. Blood was collected from 111 clinically healthy thoroughbred sight hound show dogs and family pets. The distributions according to age, breed and sex are given in Tables I and II. Haemoglobin and packed cell volume values were determined from each sample, though only 33 serum samples from the adults were suitable for clinical chemical determinations. Ten serum parameters were measured: AP, ALAT ASAT, GT, CK, urea, cholesterol, creatinine, total protein and albumin. The sight hound blood parameters obtained in this study are similar to those reported for racing greyhounds. Haemoglobin and packed cell volume values are significantly higher than the reference values for canine blood. The reference values for sight hounds are: haemoglobin 172-240/l for adults and 136-217 g/l for growing dogs; packed cell volume 50-69% for adults and 41-64% for growing dogs. Serum creatinine values are clearly higher than the reference values for normal canine blood. According to the results of our rather small material (n = 33) the reference value of serum creatinine is < 165 .mu.mol/l for adult sight hounds. Other serum parameters were within the normal limits, but serum total protein and cholesterol values may be lower and serum albumin values higher in sight hounds than in other breeds.
