Cord blood immunoglobulins: variation with birth weight and gestational age

Cord blood immunoglobulin levels of 100 newborns were estimated by single radial immunodiffusion technique. The mean IgG and IgM levels were 1402.31 .+-. 132.31 mg/100ml and 11.58 .+-. 12.58mg/100ml, respectively, IgA was not detected in any of the cord serum. The mean IgG concentration in preterms was significantly (p < 0.001) lower than full term newborns. Term newborns having birth weight more than 2 kg had significantly (p < 0.001) higher levels of IgG as compared to newborns weighting less than 2 kg. IgM did not show any significant correlation with birth weight and gestational age.
