The study was intended to be of all live born babies at Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad, during 3 months in 1969; on the basis of gestational age and physical and neurological assessment they were grouped as preterm, term and post-term, the last 2 together as mature. From 860 live born babies, 380 could be included in the study as being single births and with reliably known gestation ages. Of those, 22, 5.80%, were pre-term, 292, 76.83%, term and 66, 17.37%, post-term.
