Malnutrition is classified as primary, resulting from intakes of nutrients not consistent with requirements, and secondary, resulting from factors that interfere with their ingestion or utilization. It is pointed out that in population surveys there should be a distinc tion between these, because not all malnutrition may reflect dietary inadequacies. Hunger is defined as inadequate amounts of food for short or long periods of time.
