An introduction on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) "Iato sensu" and its definitions according to the International FAO Code of Conduct (1991) and the Agenda 21 of the UNCED (1992) is presented. Characterization of the various control methods is assembled as follows: legislation measures; cultural methods; genetical control; biocontrol; physical and chemical control methods. Reference to preventive control: the use of pathogen-free propagating material; quarantines and inspections; phytosanitary certificates and specific new technologies. Computers and electronic communications applied to a new agriculture: modelling of epidemics; computer simulation; forecasting systems and farmer-warning systems are presented here as tools for IPM.
