I/v administration of corticotrophin to 26 hens caused plasma calcium to fall. The max. decreases observed 2-3 hours after the injection of hormone were (in mEq) 1.62 in laying hens and 1.05 in hens with atrophied oviducts. In five hens on a potassium-deficient diet, the drug produced hypocalcaemia alkalosis, with plasma standard bicarbonate increasing to 13.8 mEq/litre. At the same time aciduria and decreased potassium excretion were also noted.
