Studies were undertaken in the Philippines to establish the malaria status, the nature of the environment, the knowledge of the aetiology, mode of transmission, symptomatology and control of malaria by the population and their attitudes to the various disease aspects. The sociological background, health facilities and activities of the malaria control programme in the study area (Masipi settlement area, Isabela region) are described. The mean prevalence rate for Nov. 1984 to May 1985 was 93/1000 population and the age group most affected was 40-44 years. The majority (75.8%) of cases were infected with Plasmodium vivax and the rest with P. falciparum. Education played a significant role in the acquisition of knowledge of the disease.
