Anopheles flavirostris is the main vector of malaria in the Philippines, and transmission occurs both indoors and out of doors. It has developed resistance to dieldrin but is still susceptible to DDT. Although A. maculatus and A. mangyanus have been incriminated as secondary vectors in the past, they have temporarily ceased to be so. It is suspected that A. litoralis, which has been incriminated as a secondary vector in the Philippines, is a complex of species; it transmits Plasmodium in the southern Provinces of Samar, Province of Surigao, Zamboanga, Basilan and Sulu Archipelago, but it has not been found to contribute to transmission along any of the coastal areas of Luzon Island. A. balabacensis, which has also been incriminated as a secondary vector, occurs on the island of Palawan and has occasionally been collected from Laguna Province and Luzon Island. Measures being taken to control A. flavirostris, A. litoralis and A. balabacensis are briefly reviewed.
